The Paris tasting of 1973 was the singular most important event in the history of California wine, in which two California wines won blind tasting against first growth Bordeaux and white Burgundy. The winning Chardonnay, 1973 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay was made by Mike Grgich. A few years later, in 1977, Mike Grgich founded Grgich Hills Estate in Rutherford, an iconic American winery.. Grgich Hills crafts classic examples of rich Chardonnay, plush, juicy, Zinfandel, and structured, flavorful Cabernet Sauvignon.
